About the Lessons
These lessons are the result of a project (AT&T ENRICH), funded by the
AT&T Foundation, that trained teachers to develop lessons integrating
biology, technology and engaged learning. At the time of the training the
teachers were teaching in the Chicago Public
Schools, or the
Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Schools. (More information about the teachers can be found in the
Recognition section.) The lessons vary in length from one classroom period to an
entire semester or more.
Each lesson employs the same format. An explanation follows:
Activity Structures
These are the structures defined by Professor Judi Harris. A more detailed
explanation of them can be found at Curriculum-Based Opportunities
for Internet-Supported Learning.
Goals/Outcome Statements
The AT&T ENRICH goals were developed by the teachers in the first year of
the project. These goals can be found at AT&T ENRICH Curriculum
Framework.
The SG,CAS,CFS goals are from the State of Illinois (SG-State Goals) and the
Chicago Public Schools (CAS-Chicago Academic Standards; CFS-Curriculum Framework
Statements). These Goals/Outcomes can be found at High School
Biology: Chicago Academic Standards. Only the SG and CAS items are listed; the CFS are too numerous and detailed to be included here. If you
are interested in CFS information, it is available in the publication: Expecting
More: Higher Standards for Chicago's Students-9-12 Science, available from the
Board of Education of the City of Chicago or at this URL http://www.cps.k12.il.us/Instruction/CAS/Science/Biology/biology.html

Tools and Resources
Every URL (link) was checked and accessed prior to publication of these lessons.
Unfortunately the Internet is constantly changing and links or entire sites
disappear with regularity. Before beginning a lesson with your class, check the
referenced links to see if they are still active. If you cannot access a
particular link/site, try the following.
1. Use a search engine and enter the information that may lead you to an
alternate site that provides the same or similar information. Some of our
favorite search engines are:
http://www.google.com
http://www.yahoo.com
http://www.dogpile.com
http://altavista.com
2. Remove parts of the URL by working backward (from right to left). Enter
the truncated URL in your browser (or simply truncate the URL in your browser
and press the ENTER or RETURN key). See if it brings you to a page that will
lead you to the page you are looking for. Repeating this process will eventually
bring you to the main page of the site and you may be able to find the page
referenced in the lesson. (Sometimes the operators of the site change the URL of
a given page.)

References to Teaching Strategies
Occasionally, a lesson will direct the teacher to use sharing pairs; whip
around, pass option; attentive lecture; Speak-write; outcome sentences; or some
other similar strategy. There are also some lessons that incorporate the use of
a DESCA scale or questionnaire. These references are from: Harmin, Merrill.
(1998). Strategies To Inspire Active Learning. White Plains, NY: Inspiring
Strategy Institute. More about Dr. Harmin, DESCA, and the strategies can be
found at Inspiring DESCA: A New Context for Active Learning. |
