Class Schedule for Lesson 6

1. Review Bookmarks and Advanced E-mail. Bookmark Hotmail.
2. Present Articles.
3. Newsgroups are online discussions that are posted via technology similar to E-mail. The information found in Newsgroups are divided into areas of discussion. Each Newsgroup is devoted to a particular topic. There seems to be a Newsgroup for almost any topic imaginable. There are over 40,000 Newsgroups that are publicly accessed on the Internet with several others specifically set-up for subscription or specialty use.

Think of Newgroups as being a large building with many rooms. Each room has a name on the door and is responsible for a certain topic. You are free to join in on the conversation. If you ask a question that has nothing to do with the topic, you will probably be asked to leave and find another group. Question are asked by posting messages to the room's giant bulletin board. Most of the time you post your message and return hours later to find responses to your question. Feel free to browse a Newsgroup. Many times you will find the answer to your question just by reading a previous posting. As of late, you will find that Newsgroups are bombarded with advertisements. Sometimes a message carries nothing more than an announcement of a new product.

Complete the Newsgroup Tutorial.

CPS does not have the infrastructure to handle Newsgroups. Luckily there is a browser based Newsgroup service available at http://www.dejanews.com. There you will be able to search, read or post Newgroup messages. You may browse Newsgroups by name or by searching a topic. Names are listed in Educating with the Internet. You may only post messages in Deja News if you've registered with them. Registering is free.
